The medieval town on the hill of San Giorgio, founded by the Venetians at the beginning of the thirteenth century and Catholic ever since — one of the few places in Greece where that is true. It is a knot of covered passages, coloured doors and marble steps, barely passable on anything with wheels; from the harbour the climb is about a kilometre of stairs. Go up in the late afternoon and come down after dinner.
