Athens International (ATH)
Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" is at Spata, east of the city, and it is the hub for almost every domestic flight to the islands.
Metro — the default for the centre. Line 3 runs from the airport to Syntagma and Monastiraki. A single airport ticket is €9, a return €16 (valid 30 days). Contactless Visa and Mastercard work at the gates on all Athens public transport.
Express buses — cheapest, and 24/7. The X93, X95, X96 and X97 cost €5.50 and run around the clock. The X95 goes to Syntagma in the centre and the X96 to Piraeus port (about 90 minutes) — the practical choice for an early ferry. The X93 serves the Kifissos intercity bus station and the X97 Elliniko; check the current route on oasa.gr.
The 3-day tourist ticket (€20) covers all city transport for three days and one airport round trip — worth it if you land, spend a few days in Athens and fly out again.
Suburban railway. The Proastiakos also serves the airport; check the current timetable and fare before relying on it.
Taxi. There is a flat fare to the centre, around €40 by day and €55 at night (00:00–05:00) — confirm at the rank. Card payment is mandatory in Greek taxis, and you are entitled to a receipt.
To the ferry ports. For Piraeus, take the X96 or a taxi. Rafina is much closer — about 30 minutes by KTEL bus — and serves Mykonos and the northern Cyclades. For Lavrio, KTEL Attica buses and taxis are the options; check the timetable. Full detail on the ports page.
Live arrivals and departures
Athens International Airport publishes its own live board, updated continuously, with gate changes and delays. We link to it rather than mirroring it: there is no free, reliable feed of this data, and a stale board is worse than no board when you are deciding whether to leave for the airport. For island airports, check your airline's app.

Thessaloniki's airport is south-east of the city and the natural gateway for Halkidiki and the Olympic Riviera. Buses 01X (day) and 01N (night) run to the centre for €2. A taxi to the centre is around €25 by day. The city's metro, open since November 2024, runs through the centre but does not reach the airport — connect by bus.
