Archaeological sites are the reason many people come at all: the Acropolis in Athens, Delphi (on our Meteora & Delphi page), Mycenae and Epidaurus around Nafplio, Knossos on Crete, the medieval town of Rhodes. Monasteries range from the rock-top communities of Meteora to island chapels at the end of a dirt road. Castles and fortresses are mostly Venetian — Corfu's two forts, Nafplio's Palamidi, the kastro villages of the Cyclades. Villages and viewpoints are the sights you do not pay for: Oia at sunset on Santorini, the chora of Folegandros, the whole harbour of Symi. Nature means gorges, caves and lakes — Samaria on Crete, Melissani on Kefalonia.
How to see them well
Go early. In July and August the big open-air sites are in full sun by late morning, with little shade. Arrive at opening time, carry water and a hat, and leave the museum for the hottest hours.
Monasteries have a dress code. Shoulders and knees covered, for men and women; some lend wraps at the door, not all do.
Check hours before a special trip. Opening times of state sites change between the summer and winter timetables, and smaller sites and museums on the islands keep shorter hours out of season.

When is the best time to visit Greek archaeological sites?
Spring and autumn, and in summer the first hour after opening. The large sites are open-air with little shade, and by midday in July and August the heat is the main obstacle.
What should I wear to visit a Greek monastery?
