Two islands are better than one — if they share a ferry line

The map lies in Greece: islands that look close can be a day apart, while the right pair is an easy morning hop. These combinations work in season. Tap one to turn it into a day-by-day plan — and always check the operator's timetable before booking.

Greece from Romania, by car

Northern Greece is a day's drive for many Romanians, and some of the best of it needs no plane at all: Thassos is a short car ferry away, Halkidiki and the Olympic Riviera are straight down the motorway, and Lefkada is an island you simply drive onto.

Greece — frequently asked

When is the best time to visit the Greek islands?

Late May to June and September to early October give warm sea, long days and fewer crowds. July and August are hottest and busiest, and the meltemi wind can blow hard in the Cyclades. Crete and Rhodes have the longest season; many small islands wind down from late October.

Which island should I choose for a first trip?

Crete, Naxos or Corfu suit most first-timers: good beaches, real towns and enough variety for a week, with straightforward logistics. Santorini is spectacular for two or three nights, but it is expensive and not a beach island. The island finder weighs your own answers.

Do I need to book ferries in advance?

For July, August and holiday weekends, yes — especially with a car or a cabin. Outside the peak you can often buy a few days ahead. Timetables change by season, so always check the operator's current schedule.

Is Greece expensive?

It depends hugely on where: Mykonos and Santorini in August are among the most expensive places in Greece, while Thassos, Kos or mainland beach towns are good value. Tavernas away from the harbourfront, local ferries and buses remain reasonable. Our prices page is checked in 2026.
