Arch of Galerius

4.7(17,017)out of 5 on GoogleOpen · until 23:59📍 Thessaloniki

The Arch of Galerius, known locally as the Kamara, stands on Egnatia street and has been Thessaloniki's favourite meeting point for generations. It was raised around 300 AD by the Roman emperor Galerius to celebrate his victory over the Persians, as the gateway to a palace complex that ran from the Rotunda down towards the sea.

Only part of the original structure survives, but its marble reliefs are remarkably detailed: battle scenes, the emperor in his chariot and figures of captives and gods, stacked in bands up the piers. Stand close and take your time with them. It is free and always accessible. From here, walk north up the pedestrian street to the Rotunda, or south towards the remains of Galerius's palace at Navarinou Square.
