Archaeological Site of Delos
Delos, a short boat ride west of Mykonos, was the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis and one of the great sanctuaries of the ancient Greek world, later a busy free port. The whole island is an archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Terrace of the Lions, the sanctuary of Apollo, the theatre quarter with its mosaic-floored houses and a museum of finds.
The Delos Tours boat from Mykonos costs €25 return, leaving at 10:00 (April to early November) and 16:30 (May to October); site entry is €20, bought separately. From April to October the site is open 08:00 to 20:00. Nobody stays overnight and swimming is not allowed. There is almost no shade: bring a hat, water and good shoes, and expect boats to be cancelled when the wind is strong.
