Faneromeni Monastery
Faneromeni Monastery stands on a wooded hill above Lefkada Town, a short drive from the centre, and is the island’s best-loved religious site and its most-reviewed attraction. According to tradition a monastery has stood here for centuries; the present buildings were rebuilt after a fire in the 19th century.
The complex is peaceful, with a church, a small museum of icons and church objects, and shaded courtyards. The real bonus is the view from the terrace down over Lefkada Town, the lagoon, the long sandbar and the causeway to the mainland. It is an easy half-hour visit before or after a day on the beaches of the west coast. Dress modestly, keep noise down, and check visiting hours, as the monastery may close in the early afternoon.
