New Fortress

The New Fortress rises on the hill of St Mark above the old port, on the west side of Corfu Town. Venice built it from the late 16th century, after an Ottoman siege showed that the Old Fortress alone could not protect the town, and a winged Lion of St Mark still guards the main gate. Together with the Old Fortress and the town between them, it belongs to the Old Town of Corfu World Heritage Site.

Inside are vaulted tunnels, galleries and ramparts, with wide views over the rooftops, the harbour and the ferries coming in from Igoumenitsa. It is usually much quieter than its older sibling. Opening times and exhibitions vary through the year, so check before you walk up, and wear shoes with grip for the stone ramps.
