Old Fortress

The Old Fortress fills the rocky double-peaked headland east of the Spianada, cut off from the town by the Contrafossa, a sea moat dug by the Venetians. Byzantine walls came first; Venice turned the place into one of the strongest fortresses in the Mediterranean, and the British added barracks and the Church of St George, built like a Greek temple. It is part of the Old Town of Corfu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007.
Cross the bridge over the moat, then climb to the lighthouse on the higher peak for the best view in town: red roofs, the channel and the mountains of Albania. The climb is steep and exposed, so avoid midday. Check the day's hours before you go, particularly outside the summer season.
