Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes
The fortress-palace at the top of the Street of the Knights was the seat of the Grand Masters of the Order of St John. What you walk through today is largely a reconstruction: the original was wrecked by a gunpowder explosion in 1856, and the Italian administration rebuilt it in the late 1930s as a showpiece, laying Roman and early Christian mosaics brought from Kos into the floors.
That history makes it more interesting, not less. Look for the mosaics, the vast halls and the exhibitions on ancient and medieval Rhodes on the ground floor. The palace is part of the Medieval City World Heritage Site, and its €20 package ticket also covers other sites in the old town. Check the day's hours before you go, and arrive early in summer.
