Possidi Cape

4.6(3,242)out of 5 on GoogleOpen · until 23:59📍 Halkidiki

Possidi is a long, low sandy spit reaching out from the west coast of Kassandra into the Thermaic Gulf, with a lighthouse at its tip and beaches along both sides. Its name recalls Poseidon, and excavations near the base of the cape have uncovered the remains of an ancient sanctuary of the sea god.

The cape is a place to walk and swim rather than to sightsee: follow the sand out towards the lighthouse, choosing whichever side is sheltered from the wind, and stay for the sunset over the gulf, with the outline of Mount Olympus visible on clear evenings. The approach is by road through the village of Possidi, with the last stretch on sand and dirt tracks, so park sensibly and bring water and shade.
