Skaros Rock

4.8(3,014)out of 5 on GoogleOpen · until 23:59📍 Imerovigli, Santorini

Skaros is the dark headland that juts into the caldera below Imerovigli. In the Middle Ages it carried the island’s main fortified settlement, with a castle and houses crowded onto the rock; earthquakes and time left almost nothing, and today it is a bare promontory with a small chapel on its far side.

The walk down from Imerovigli takes you along a stepped path, then round the rock on a narrow trail with the drop to the sea on one side. It is not technical, but it is steep, exposed and hot, with no shade and no water on the way. Go in the early morning or towards evening, wear proper shoes and skip it on very windy days. Sunset from the ridge above is excellent and less crowded than Oia.
