Solomos Square
Solomos Square is the civic heart of Zakynthos Town, a broad paved space open to the harbour and named after Dionysios Solomos, the island-born poet whose Hymn to Liberty supplies the words of the Greek national anthem. His statue stands among the palms.
Most of what you see was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake and fire flattened the town, but the rebuilding kept the arcaded, Venetian-flavoured look that earned the island the nickname Fiore di Levante. The small stone church of Agios Nikolaos tou Molou sits at the harbour end, and the square is lined with public buildings and cafés. It is at its best in the evening, when locals walk the waterfront, and it makes a natural start for a stroll to Agios Markos Square and up to Bochali for the view.
