Temple of Aphaia

4.7(9,521)out of 5 on GoogleOpen · until 19:00📍 Aegina

The Temple of Aphaia stands on a pine-covered hilltop in the north-east of Aegina, above the resort of Agia Marina, and is one of the best-preserved Archaic temples in Greece. Built around 500 BC in limestone for a local goddess, it keeps most of its outer Doric columns and even part of its upper colonnade, which is rare.

Its famous pediment sculptures, warriors from the Trojan wars, were taken away in the early 19th century and are now in the Glyptothek in Munich; the small site museum gives the context. Come in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the views over the Saronic Gulf reach towards Athens. Buses from Aegina Town pass by on the way to Agia Marina; check the day's hours.
