Red Beach, near Akrotiri on the south coast, is a small bay of dark sand and pebbles under a cliff of red and black volcanic rock. It is one of the most photographed places on Santorini and one of the least practical for swimming.
The cliff is unstable. Authorities have fenced and signposted the area for years because of rockfall risk, and the rough path from the car park crosses loose ground. The sensible way to see it is from the viewpoint above, a short walk from the small church by the car park, or from the sea on one of the boat trips that run along the south coast. If you want a real beach day, go to Perissa, Perivolos or Vlychada instead. Morning light shows the colours best.
