On the north-east coast below the villages of Pelopi and Vafios, a bay of reddish-pink volcanic shingle that is unlike anything else on the island. A couple of tavernas, some sunbeds, clear deep water. The drive out through the pine and oak hills is part of the day, and so is the diversion to the Taxiarchis monastery at Mantamados.
