Posidonia, Vari & the south
Venetian-era villas in gardens behind the southern bays, with the prettiest quiet swims on Syros at Agathopes and Komito and sheltered sand at Vari.

The southern tip is the villa end of Syros. Posidonia — Delagrazia to the people who summer there — is a scatter of nineteenth-century mansions in gardens, built by Ermoupoli's merchant families when the city was still the richest port in Greece, and it has kept the slow, shaded, slightly formal feeling that goes with them.
The swimming below is the best on the island for a quiet day. Agathopes and Komito in the south-west are prettier and emptier than anything on the west coast, with a small islet offshore and shallow clear water; Megas Gialos and Ampela face south-east and are sandy and organised; and Vari, round the corner in its own deep bay, is the sheltered one that works for small children and on days the meltemi is up.
There are only a couple of hotels down here, so most people who stay take a house. Ermoupoli is fifteen minutes by road and the airport is on the plain between, which makes this the easiest corner of Syros to arrive into late.
