Sithonia is the leg people come back for. There is no continuous resort strip — the road climbs and drops between headlands, and most of the beaches are coves you park above and walk down to. Neos Marmaras is the only place on this half with a real town's worth of tavernas and bars; everything else is a handful of rooms behind a bay.
The east coast is the reason to rent a car. Kavourotrypes and the sand around Sarti face Mount Athos, which turns violet at dusk; Kalamitsi and Tourkolimnionas at the southern end are small, clear and full by noon in August. Porto Koufo, between them, is a harbour so enclosed by hills that you cannot see the open sea from the quay.
Nothing here is quick. Reckon on roughly two hours from Thessaloniki airport to Neos Marmaras, and more again for the far side of the leg.
