Olympic Riviera & Mount Olympus· Παραλία & Κατερίνη

Paralia & Katerini

The resort strip itself: Paralia and Olympiaki Akti, hotel after hotel behind a wide shallow beach, with Katerini's shops and bus station ten minutes inland.

This is the part of Greece that Romanian and Serbian families drive to, and it is built for exactly that: a long flat beach of fine sand, water that stays shallow a long way out, a pedestrian seafront of souvlaki counters and ice cream, and rooms at prices the islands cannot match. Nobody comes here for the scenery.

Paralia proper is the dense, noisy end; Olympiaki Akti, a little south, is slightly calmer; Korinos further north is quieter again. Katerini, a few kilometres inland, is the real town — supermarkets, a hospital, the KTEL bus station and the railway to Thessaloniki.

Mount Olympus stands directly behind the strip and fills the view from the beach, which is the oddest and best thing about the place. Litochoro and the gorge are about half an hour away by car.
