Greece in September

The best month of the year for most trips: sea still at its warmest, heat easing, crowds thinning after the first week.

Crowds: BusyPrices: High

September keeps what August built — a sea of around 24–27°C — and loses much of what made August hard. Athens drops to an average high of about 28°C, families have gone home after the first week, and prices ease through the month. The meltemi usually fades from mid-September.

This is the month for the islands that are hardest in summer: Santorini's caldera walk without the midday heat, Milos and Folegandros, the long beaches of Rhodes and Crete. Site hours start to shorten — the Acropolis closes at 19:00 from 16 September — and the last weekend brings free admission at state sites.
