Alalkomenae at Aetos
Αλαλκομενές
On the narrow waist of the island above the Aetos isthmus, the remains of the ancient town of Alalkomenae — Cyclopean wall sections, terraces and a hilltop acropolis. Heinrich Schliemann dug here in the 1870s convinced he had found the palace of Odysseus; he had not, but the site is real and important, and the position between two seas is extraordinary. A steep twenty-minute climb from the road.
