Castle of Mytilene
Κάστρο Μυτιλήνης
One of the largest castles in the Mediterranean, spread over the pine-covered headland between Mytilene's two harbours. Justinian built here, the Gattilusi rebuilt it as their seat, the Ottomans extended it again, and the result is a layered site of gates, cisterns, a medresse and a ruined church, with pine shade and sea views throughout. Allow an hour and wear something on your feet that copes with loose stone.
