Historical Archive - Museum of Hydra

4.7(948)out of 5 on GoogleCloses at 16:00📍 Hydra

The Historical Archive and Museum of Hydra occupies a handsome stone building on the harbour front, a few steps from where the ferries and fast boats tie up. It holds the record of the island's golden age, when Hydriot shipowners grew rich on trade and then threw their fleets into the Greek War of Independence of 1821: documents, portraits, weapons, costumes and maritime objects.

It is small enough to see in under an hour and a good way to understand why a rocky island with no water built such grand mansions. Visit in the heat of the day, when the harbour is at its most glaring, or while waiting for a boat. Hydra has no cars, so everything in town is reached on foot; check the day's hours before you go.
