Parthenon

🏛️ UNESCO

The Parthenon was built between 447 and 432 BC as the great temple of Athena, under the direction of Pericles, with Iktinos and Kallikrates as architects and Pheidias in charge of the sculpture. It stood largely intact for two thousand years, as church and then mosque, until 1687, when a Venetian shell ignited Ottoman gunpowder stored inside and blew out its centre.

You view it from outside; the interior is closed, and cranes and scaffolding are part of the picture, since restoration has been going on for decades. Look for the subtle curves that make its lines look straight, and walk the full circuit. It is part of the Acropolis World Heritage Site and covered by the same ticket; see the Acropolis of Athens for slots and hours.
