Temple of Poseidon
The Temple of Poseidon stands on Cape Sounion, the southern tip of Attica, about 70 kilometres from central Athens, its white Doric columns set on a cliff above the Aegean. It was built in the mid-5th century BC, in the same confident generation as the Parthenon, and for sailors it was the last sight of home. Lord Byron carved his name into one of the columns; you will not be the first to look for it.
The site stays open until sunset, which is precisely when everyone wants to be there, so expect coaches and a crowded rim in summer. Arrive an hour or two before, walk the edges for the views and find your spot early. The coastal drive along the Athens Riviera is part of the pleasure; check the day's ticket price on arrival.
