Sarakiniko

4.8(8,764)out of 5 on GoogleOpen · until 23:59📍 Milos

Sarakiniko, on the north coast of Milos, is a bay of smooth white volcanic rock that wind and waves have carved into ridges, gullies and overhangs. It looks like a moonscape dropped into the Aegean, and it is by far the most-reviewed place on the island. A narrow inlet of turquoise water cuts into the rock, with a small patch of sand at its head.

There is no shade, no sunbeds and no café on the rocks, and the white surface reflects heat and glare: bring water, a hat and sunglasses. Go at sunrise or in the late afternoon; by midday in summer it is both crowded and scorching. People jump from the ledges into the channel, but depths vary and the rock is slippery when wet, so check before you leap. On north-wind days the sea here gets rough.
