Gerakas Beach
Gerakas is the long sandy beach at the very end of the Vasilikos peninsula, backed by pale clay cliffs and part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. It is one of the main nesting beaches of the loggerhead turtle, which explains why it feels so different from the resort strips across the bay: no loud bars, a quiet entrance and rules that are actually enforced.
The water is shallow and the sand soft, which makes it good for children. Expect restrictions: nesting areas are marked, the beach closes at night in the nesting season, and umbrellas are kept to a zone near the water. Do not dig, do not leave anything on the sand overnight, and keep well clear of nests. Arrive early in July and August; parking fills up.
