Katergo is the beach that turns up on every Folegandros poster: a pebble cove at the south-eastern tip of the island, with a rocky islet just offshore and water of an almost unreal blue. There is no road, no taverna and no shade, which is exactly why it looks the way it does.
In summer small boats run from the port of Karavostasis, a short ride, and are the easy option; they depend on the sea, so ask at the harbour the day before. The alternative is a hike from Livadi over rough, exposed ground, best early in the morning and only with proper shoes. Bring water, food, sun protection and something to make shade, and take all your rubbish back with you. Snorkelling around the rocks is excellent on a calm day.
