Your best matches
Α · 99% matchAmorgosHozoviotissa monastery glued to a cliff three hundred metres above the sea, the best-kept donkey paths in the Cyclades and water you meet vertically.
- ✓ quiet and unhurried
- ✓ good conditions in September
- ✓ wild coves to find
Watch out: Five to ten hours from Piraeus and no airport; the beaches are small and pebbly — if sand is the point, Naxos is two hours away.
Where to stay in Amorgos
Β · 99% matchAndrosThe green Cyclade: springs and plane trees, around 300 km of waymarked stone footpaths, a shipowners' town on a rock spine and a contemporary art museum.
- ✓ quiet and unhurried
- ✓ good conditions in September
- ✓ wild coves to find
Watch out: Two hours by ferry from Rafina and no airport of its own; the wild east-coast beaches need a car with some clearance.
Γ · 99% matchIthacaOdysseus' island, and still unhurried: deep harbours at Vathy, Kioni and Frikes, Homeric sites nobody charges for, and 2,862 inhabitants.
- ✓ quiet and unhurried
- ✓ good conditions in September
- ✓ wild coves to find
Watch out: No airport — you arrive via Kefalonia — the beaches are small pebble coves, and almost everything closes in winter.

How the finder decides
Every destination has a hand-written profile: how you reach it (international flights, domestic only, ferry, or a realistic drive from Romania), how it suits couples, families, friends and solo travellers, its moods, beach types, cost level, crowds, exposure to the summer meltemi, and a month-by-month season.
Your answers are scored against those profiles. How you travel and when count most — a ferry-only island is simply wrong if you want to fly direct, and many small islands are closed in winter. Beach type and trip length refine the shortlist rather than build it.
Commission plays no part in the ranking. Partner links appear under a result only after it has been chosen.
Choosing an island — quick answers
Which Greek island is best for a first visit?
For most first-timers, Crete, Naxos or Corfu: all three combine good beaches, real towns and enough variety for a week, with easier logistics than the smaller Cyclades. Santorini is unforgettable for two or three nights, but it is expensive and not a beach island.
Which islands can you reach by car from Romania?
Thassos (a short car ferry) and Lefkada (joined to the mainland by a causeway) are the classic island drives, with Halkidiki, the Olympic Riviera and Parga on the mainland. Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakynthos are possible with a longer drive and a ferry from the western ports.
Is July or August a bad time for the Cyclades?
Not bad, but windy: the meltemi, the summer north wind, can blow for days in July and August. It keeps the heat down but roughens north-facing beaches and can delay small and fast ferries. The Ionian islands are largely sheltered from it.
