Plomari & the south

The ouzo town, with distilleries that have been there since the nineteenth century, sheltered coves on either side of it and the island's longest beach at Vatera.

Plomari on the south coast is the ouzo town. The distilleries have been here since the nineteenth century and the main square was built for drinking slowly — ouzo on Lesvos is drunk with food, never alone. Ammoudeli and Agios Isidoros are the coves either side of it, small and sheltered and within walking distance of the square.

West along the coast is Vatera: nine kilometres of sand, the biggest beach on the island, with Nyfida and the Polichnitos salt pans beyond it. This is the quiet half of Lesvos — no castle town, no coach traffic, and prices to match.

Above it all sits Agiasos, high under Mount Olympos: the mountain village with the ceramics and the big pilgrimage church, and a good lunch on the way back down. From Plomari to Mytilene is under an hour over the hill, which is the drive you will do if you fly in.
