This is the Santorini on the postcard: whitewashed terraces stacked down a volcanic cliff, with the drowned crater and the islet of Nea Kameni below. Fira is the busy middle — buses, shops, the Museum of Prehistoric Thera — and the cheapest rooms on the rim are a short walk inland at Karterados. Imerovigli is quieter and higher, Oia is the most beautiful and the most photographed, and the clifftop path between Fira and Oia is the one walk on the island worth planning a morning around.
What you are paying for is the drop. A room without a caldera view costs a fraction of one with it, and in Oia the difference is severe. Cruise days are the pinch point: the island works under a cap of 8,000 cruise passengers a day, and when ships are in, Oia before sunset is shoulder to shoulder.
Getting up and down from the old port below Fira is by cable car — €10 one way in 2026, €5 for children 6–12, €5 per piece of luggage — or on foot down the steps. KTEL buses radiate from Fira: €2.20 to Oia, the airport, Kamari or Akrotiri, €2.70 to Perissa and the Athinios ferry port (fares checked 2026).
