Greece in January

A city month, not an island one: Athens, Thessaloniki and Meteora are at their emptiest, and most islands are asleep.

Crowds: QuietPrices: Lowest

January is the Greek year at its most local. Athens averages a high of around 14°C, which is mild enough to walk the Acropolis without queues and eat outside at midday on a sunny day. Thessaloniki is noticeably colder — lows near 2°C — and Meteora can see snow on the rocks.

The islands are a different proposition. Ferries run winter timetables, most hotels and beach tavernas are closed, and a crossing can be cancelled for wind. Crete is the exception worth considering: Heraklion averages about 15°C and has a year-round life of its own, though January brings around 90 mm of rain there, against almost none in July.
