Greece in July

Hot, windy in the Aegean, busy everywhere. Go west to the Ionian or north to Halkidiki, and do the Acropolis at 08:00.

Crowds: PeakPrices: Highest

July is the hottest month in Athens (average high around 32°C, with heatwaves well above that) and the start of real peak season. The sea is at 24–26°C. Rain is almost unknown: Heraklion records under a millimetre in an average July.

The meltemi is the defining feature of an Aegean July. It keeps the Cyclades cooler than the mainland, but it churns up north-facing beaches and can cancel ferries, fast boats first. The Ionian islands are largely spared, which makes Corfu, Paxos, Kefalonia and Lefkada the calmer bet this month. Wherever you go, book early and plan sightseeing for the morning.
