Greece in March

The first green month: wildflowers, Clean Monday kites, Independence Day parades — and a free day at the Acropolis.

Crowds: QuietPrices: Lowest

March is when Greece turns green. The hills of Crete, the Peloponnese and the Ionian are covered in flowers, and Athens reaches highs of around 16°C. It is a lovely month for walking and for the ancient sites, which are still quiet.

The calendar is busy with local life rather than tourism: Clean Monday marks the start of Lent with picnics and kites, the Patras Carnival ends with its parade, and 25 March brings Independence Day parades in every town. The islands are still mostly closed, and swimming is for the brave.
