Acropolis Museum
The Acropolis Museum opened in 2009 at the foot of the rock, in a glass-and-concrete building by Bernard Tschumi. Glass floors at the entrance look down onto the excavated remains of an ancient Athenian neighbourhood, and the galleries hold the finds from the Acropolis itself, including five of the original Caryatids from the Erechtheion.
The top floor is the reason to come. The Parthenon Gallery is aligned with the temple, visible through the windows, and sets out the frieze and metopes in their original order; the gaps are filled with pale plaster casts of the pieces held in the British Museum, a quiet but pointed statement. Visit before or after the Acropolis, ideally in the heat of the afternoon, and check the day's hours.
