Anavatos

Ανάβατος

🎟️ Free entry

A village of grey stone houses stacked up a three-hundred-metre cliff, almost entirely empty since the reprisals of 1822, when the inhabitants who did not escape are said to have jumped rather than be taken. A path climbs through the ruins to the church at the top. Some of it is consolidated, some is not; stay on the marked route and keep children close. It is twenty minutes from Nea Moni and the two are always done together.
