Hephaistia was the principal city of ancient Limnos, named for the god who, thrown out of Olympus, landed on this island. The excavated area runs down to the sea and includes a sanctuary, a necropolis and a theatre built into the slope with the bay as its backdrop — one of the better places in Greece to sit in an empty theatre and have it entirely to yourself. Signage is thin, so read the museum in Myrina first.
