Myrina Castle
Κάστρο Μύρινας
The rock between Myrina's two beaches carries one of the largest castles in the Aegean — Byzantine in origin, rebuilt by the Venetians and the Genoese, then held by the Ottomans. Little of the interior survives beyond cisterns and curtain walls, but the circuit is enormous and the view takes in the whole west coast and, on a clear evening, Mount Athos across the water. A herd of fallow deer lives inside the walls and appears at dusk. The climb takes about twenty minutes on a stepped path; there is no shade and no railing in places.
