On a low bluff above the east coast lie the remains of a settlement that was already a town when Troy was a village: streets, a square, houses with storage jars still in place, a well-built drainage system and a long hall often described as one of the earliest assembly buildings known. Italian archaeologists have worked here since the 1930s and the phases are colour-named, from Black through Blue and Green to Yellow. A small museum beside the site explains the sequence. Bring a hat — there is no shade on the excavation.
