Aegiali & the north

The northern port and the only run of sand on Amorgos, with two stone villages stacked on the slope above and the best walking on the island starting from them.

  • Hiking
  • Peace & quiet

Aegiali is the second port, at the opposite end of a thirty-three-kilometre island, and it is the beach half. Levrossos, Psili Ammos, Chochlakas and Mikri Vlichada run north from the harbour in a line — small and pebbly like everything on Amorgos, but the nearest thing here to an easy swim, and the only place where the rooms look straight at the water.

Above the bay, Tholaria and Langada are stacked, stone-built and far better preserved than their size suggests, with the ruins of ancient Aigiali on the ridge between them. The old donkey paths here are among the best-kept in the Cyclades, and the long route between Aegiali and Chora, over the shoulder of the mountain by the two villages, is the one to do.

Beds concentrate here more than anywhere else on the island, which also means they sell out first. In August the Greek crowd arrives and the handful of rooms go months ahead; May, June, September and early October are ideal for the paths anyway.
