Corfu vs Zakynthos: The Two Ionian Defaults, Compared
A Venetian town with a UNESCO old quarter, or the island of boat days and turtles? Where Corfu and Zakynthos differ on beaches, crowds, culture and cost.

The short version
Pick Corfu if you want an island with a real town on it — a Venetian, French and British one, with arcades, a cricket ground and two fortresses — plus green hills, a long coast and enough to do when the weather turns. Pick Zakynthos if the holiday is built around water: boat days along a white-cliffed west coast, sea caves, and the turtles of Laganas Bay.
The honest faults. Corfu Town is lovely and it is also the busiest cruise port in the Ionian, with 894,179 cruise passengers in 2025; on a two-ship morning the Liston is wall to wall, and the island's north-east coast has been expensive for fifty years. Zakynthos has a weaker town, a notorious party strip at Laganas sitting directly beside a protected nesting beach, and its single most famous sight — Navagio — is closed to landings and swimming until 31 October 2026 after a landslide. You can look at it from above. You cannot stand on it.
Corfu: the one with a town
Corfu Town is the reason to choose this island, and it is a genuine one. The old quarter has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007, and it reads as a Venetian port that later acquired French arcades and British public buildings: the Old Fortress on its rocky promontory, the green expanse of the Spianada, tall shuttered houses in lanes too narrow for cars. It is the best town on any Ionian island by a wide margin, and it works in April and October as well as it does in August.
Outside the town the island splits. The north-east is the green, cypress-covered coast facing Albania, with small pebble bays and the most expensive villas in the Ionian. The north-west has the drama — Porto Timoni, a double bay reached on foot, the cliffs and monastery at Paleokastritsa, Rovinia below the olive terraces, and Angelokastro on its crag. The south is flatter, sandier, cheaper and more packaged, which is also why families book it.
One warning worth having before you plan a day around it: the Achilleion, the Habsburg palace above Gastouri, is open as gardens and outdoor areas only while restoration work continues. Entry is €7 (checked September 2026). Go for the terrace and the view, not the interiors.
Zakynthos: the one with the boat days
Zakynthos is smaller, drier and more theatrical. Its west coast is a wall of white limestone dropping into water of a blue that photographs badly because nobody believes it. Navagio is the postcard, and since the 2026 landslide risk assessment the beach is closed to landing and swimming until the end of October 2026; boats cannot put you ashore, and the view is from the clifftop platform. Our guide to Zakynthos after the Navagio closure sets out what still works.
Plenty still does. The Blue Caves at the northern tip, the Keri caves in the south and Porto Limnionas on the west coast are all boat-or-swim places of the first order, and the west side around Kampi has the island's best sunsets.
Then there are the loggerhead turtles. Laganas Bay is a national marine park; nesting beaches are closed at night from May to October, umbrellas are kept back from the water on them, and hatching runs from late July into October. Gerakas, on the Vasilikos peninsula, is the best of them and the one to base near if the turtles are why you came. Laganas itself, a few kilometres along the same bay, is a loud package strip. Both things are true at once, and which one you meet depends entirely on where you book.
Beaches, head to head
Zakynthos wins on spectacle: nothing on Corfu matches the west coast cliffs, and Makris Gialos and Porto Limnionas give you swimming straight off rock into deep clear water. Corfu wins on range and on shade. It has sandy family beaches in the south, pebble coves in the north-east, surf-facing sand at Glyfada on the west, and olive and cypress cover almost everywhere, which matters in a July heatwave. Corfu's beach pages are on the Corfu beaches list and Zakynthos's on the Zakynthos one.
Getting there, and the car question
Corfu is the easier island to reach without flying. The ferry from Igoumenitsa takes 1h10 to 1h30, from around €6 for a foot passenger and about €24 for a car, which makes it realistic as part of a mainland road trip; Corfu airport (CFU) also takes direct summer flights from several Romanian cities, though schedules change every year, so check the airline rather than last season's list. Zakynthos is reached from Kyllini in roughly 1h15, with cars from about €38, or by air into ZTH. Prices checked September 2026, and the ferries page has the operators.
Both islands need a car if you intend to move around, and both have winding inland roads where the map time is optimistic. Corfu is longer than it looks: Kassiopi to the far south is a serious drive, so pick a coast and stay on it.
Cost and crowding
Neither gets the reduced island VAT rate that applies in parts of the Dodecanese and the north Aegean, so prices behave like the mainland plus a summer premium. Zakynthos is generally the cheaper of the two for a week in a package hotel; Corfu's north-east is the single most expensive stretch of Ionian coast, while its south is competitive with anything on Zakynthos. Both carry the climate resilience fee per room per night, €2 at a rooms-and-apartments property and €10 at a 4-star from April to October (checked September 2026). See the prices page for the rest.
On crowds: Corfu's problem is concentrated and predictable — Old Town, mid-morning, cruise days. Walk the lanes before nine or after six and it mostly disappears. Zakynthos's problem is concentrated in Laganas and on the boats to Navagio, and it is avoidable by booking elsewhere.
Who should pick which
Choose Corfu if you want a town worth an evening every night, you travel in May, June, September or October, you care about architecture and food as much as swimming, or you are driving in from the mainland. Families should look at the south — our Corfu with kids guide is the detail — and anyone with a spare day should take the boat to Paxos, 45 minutes to 1h20 away from around €15.
Choose Zakynthos if your week is about water: boats, caves, snorkelling and long days on the Vasilikos peninsula, with turtles as a genuine reason to come between late July and October. Base at Vasilikos or Tsilivi, not Laganas, unless the strip is the point.
Choose neither if you want a quiet island with no package trade at all; Paxos or Ithaca will suit you better, and the island finder will say so faster than we can.
Doing both
It is awkward and people still do it. There is no quick hop between them: you go Corfu, back to the mainland at Igoumenitsa, down the coast, and across from Kyllini. Give it two weeks, drive it as a loop with a night in Parga or Lefkada in the middle, and treat the mainland leg as part of the holiday rather than a transfer. Where to sleep on each is on the Corfu stay page and the Zakynthos stay page.

Frequently asked
Is Corfu or Zakynthos better for a first trip to the Ionian?
Corfu, for most people. It has a UNESCO old town worth an evening every night, a wider range of beaches and the easiest access without flying. Choose Zakynthos instead if the week is really about boats, sea caves and turtles.
Can you still visit Navagio beach in 2026?
Not on foot. Navagio is closed to landing and swimming until 31 October 2026 after a landslide risk assessment, so boats cannot put passengers ashore. You can see it from the clifftop viewing platform, and boat trips still run along the coast and to the Blue Caves.
Which island is cheaper?
Zakynthos, usually, for a week in a package hotel. Corfu's north-east is the most expensive coast in the Ionian, but its south is competitive. Neither gets the reduced island VAT rate that applies in parts of the Dodecanese and north Aegean.
When can you see the turtles on Zakynthos?
Loggerheads nest in Laganas Bay through the summer and hatching runs from late July into October. Nesting beaches close at night from May to October and umbrellas are kept back from the water. Gerakas on the Vasilikos peninsula is the beach to base near.
How do you reach each island by ferry?
Corfu from Igoumenitsa in 1h10 to 1h30, from around €6 on foot and about €24 with a car. Zakynthos from Kyllini in roughly 1h15, cars from about €38. Prices checked September 2026; check the operator for current timetables.
Is the Achilleion palace open?
Only the gardens and outdoor areas, while restoration continues. Entry is €7, checked September 2026. Plan it as a short stop for the terrace and the view over the island rather than a full museum visit.
