Megali Panagia Monastery
Μονή Μεγάλης Παναγίας
A sixteenth-century monastery in the hills above the south coast, with a frescoed church and a cool, arcaded courtyard. It is rarely busy and the surviving wall paintings are the best on the island. The approach road is narrow. Shoulders and knees covered, and respect the midday closing — monastic hours, not museum hours.
