Pythagoreion
Πυθαγόρειο
The ancient capital of Samos, fortified, harboured and watered by Polycrates in the sixth century BC, and today a working town with its archaeology under and beside it. The World Heritage inscription of 1992 covers the whole ensemble: the city walls running up the hill, the Roman baths, the ancient mole still carrying the modern harbour, the theatre, and the Tunnel of Eupalinos above the town. Walk it rather than driving — the pieces are scattered through the streets, and the town is small.
