Entry, documents, ETIAS and EES

Greece is in the EU and Schengen. EU citizens travel on an ID card and need nothing else; ETIAS has not started. Non-EU visitors meet the new EES biometric check.

EU citizens

Greece is a member of the European Union and the Schengen area. Citizens of EU countries — Romania included, which has been a full Schengen member since 1 January 2025, with land border checks lifted — travel on a valid national identity card or a passport. No visa, no registration, no form.

Checks can still happen: airlines check ID at the gate, ferry companies ask for an ID or passport with your ticket, and Schengen countries can reintroduce temporary border controls. Carry the document you travelled on at all times.

ETIAS: not yet, and never for EU citizens

ETIAS, the online travel authorisation for visa-exempt non-EU visitors, has not launched. It has been delayed repeatedly and is now reported for 2027. EU citizens will never need it. Ignore any website that asks you to pay for one today.

EES: the new check for non-EU visitors

The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. Visitors from outside the EU — Britons, Americans and others — register fingerprints and a facial image at their first Schengen border crossing, and the system replaces passport stamps. The first crossing takes longer; allow extra time at the airport. EU citizens are not affected.

Visa-exempt non-EU visitors can stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Children

Children need their own ID card or passport. A minor travelling with only one parent is generally expected to carry a certified consent from the other parent — rules and practice vary by country of departure, so check with your own authorities before you go.

Driving documents

Driving licence, vehicle registration and valid insurance. For cars from Romania and the rest of the EU, a Green Card is generally not required. Details for the drive down are on Greece from Romania.
