LGBTQ+ travellers

Greece legalised same-sex civil marriage in 2024. Athens and Mykonos are openly welcoming; rural areas are more conservative but rarely hostile.

The law

In February 2024 Greece became the first Orthodox-majority country to legalise same-sex civil marriage. Discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity is prohibited by law.

Where

Athens has a visible LGBTQ+ scene, concentrated in Gazi and nearby neighbourhoods, and an annual Pride, usually in June. Mykonos has been a gay destination for decades and is openly welcoming. Thessaloniki has its own Pride and scene. Lesvos draws lesbian travellers to Skala Eresou.

Everywhere else

Greece is socially more conservative outside the cities, and the Orthodox Church remains influential. Holding hands in a village or at a monastery may draw looks; hostility towards visitors is uncommon. Hotels do not question couples booking a double room.

If something goes wrong

Call 112 for an emergency. Hate-motivated offences can be reported to the police.
