Phones, SIM cards and eSIM

On an EU plan, your phone works in Greece as it does at home. From outside the EU, an eSIM bought before you fly is the simplest option.

EU visitors: roam like at home

Under EU roaming rules, a SIM from any EU country — Romania included — works in Greece at domestic prices for calls, texts and data, within your plan's fair-use limits. Check your operator's data allowance for abroad before a long stay.

From outside the EU

UK, US and other non-EU plans may charge heavily for roaming. Two options:

  • An eSIM bought online before you travel, activated when you land. Nothing to buy at the airport, and you keep your own number for messages.
  • A Greek prepaid SIM from one of the national networks, sold in their shops; registration requires your passport.

Coverage

Mobile coverage is good in towns and on the main islands, patchier in mountains, on remote beaches and at sea between islands. Download offline maps before driving on a big island. Useful apps: the ferry operators' apps for e-tickets, and MyCoast if you find a beach blocked.

Wi-Fi

Almost every hotel, café and taverna has free Wi-Fi. It is rarely fast enough for video calls on a small island in August.
