Skiathos

Skiathos is small, roughly twelve kilometres end to end, and it packs a surprising amount into that length. Pine trees reach almost to the waterline, the south coast is a string of sandy bays with a bus running past them, and the town at the harbour stays up late. It is not a quiet island in August, and it doesn't pretend to be. What it offers instead is ease: short distances, soft sand, shade, and an airport five minutes from town.

The crowd is a mix of British and Scandinavian regulars who have been coming for decades, Greek families from Volos and Athens, and younger groups here for the bars. The island divides neatly. The south coast between town and Koukounaries is developed, with hotels, tavernas and organised beaches almost continuously. The north coast is wilder, steeper and more exposed to wind, with far fewer buildings and better water on calm days.

Planes come in low over the water and the edge of town, because the runway sits almost next door; watching arrivals from the road at its end has become an unofficial attraction.

ΒWhere to stay

Skiathos Town suits anyone without a car and anyone who wants dinner and a drink on foot. The old quarter climbs two small hills above the old port, and the lanes around Papadiamantis Street hold most of the bars. Expect some noise.

The south-coast strip (Achladies, Vasilias, Kanapitsa, Vromolimnos, Platanias, Troulos) is where most resort hotels sit: Kassandra Bay Resort above Vasilias, Princess Resort at Platanias, La Luna at Troulos. Good for families and beach-first holidays; the bus makes town easy.

Koukounaries at the western end puts you beside the island’s best-known sand; Elivi Skiathos is the headline address here. Quieter at night, and a long way from town nightlife.

ΓWhat to see beyond the sand

The island’s cultural weight rests on a handful of places. Evangelistria Monastery, in the hills north of town, is the most visited and the most rewarding. In town, the Papadiamantis House Museum remembers the island’s great writer, and the church of Agios Nikolaos with its clock tower gives the best view over the harbour. The pine-covered Bourtzi peninsula between the two ports is a pleasant evening walk.

The most atmospheric excursion is Kastro, the ruined medieval capital on the northern headland, where islanders lived behind cliffs to escape pirates until the early nineteenth century. Round-island boat trips from the old port usually stop below it and at Lalaria, the white-pebble beach under a rock arch that you can only reach by sea.

ΕEating and drinking

Seafood and grilled fish dominate the harbour, and prices sit at island levels. Bourtzi on the peninsula and Akrogiali on the waterfront are among the most reviewed; up in the lanes, Marmita draws a steady crowd. Book ahead in July and August. Skiathos has the most developed nightlife in the Sporades; cocktail bars cluster around the old port, such as Ginfish.

ΣΤGetting there and around

Skiathos has its own airport (JSI), served mostly by seasonal flights from northern Europe plus domestic links; routes change every year, so check the airline. By sea, ferries and fast boats run from Volos, typically 1h15 to 2h45, and in season from Agios Konstantinos; see ferries. Boats continue to Skopelos and Alonissos, which makes Skopelos the natural second stop.

Drivers from Romania usually go via Kulata–Promachonas and Thessaloniki to Volos, then leave the car or bring it across; on an island this size you rarely need one. The south-coast bus is frequent in summer, and scooters, quads and boats fill the gaps. More on getting around and from Romania.

ΖWhen to go

June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, open tavernas, fewer people. July and August are hot, typically low thirties by day, with the sea around 25–26°C, and the south-coast beaches fill up. Much of the island closes from November to April. Check the weather before booking boat days.

ΗWho it suits

Families, first-timers to the Greek islands, beach lovers who want sand rather than pebbles, and groups who want a good night out. Skip it if you want empty beaches in August or classic whitewashed Cycladic architecture; this is pine and red roofs, and it gets crowded.
