Skopelos

Skopelos is what many people hope Skiathos will be: greener, calmer, less built up, with a main town that still looks like a working Greek harbour rather than a resort. It is larger than its neighbour and far more wooded, with pine running down to the sea on the west coast and plum and olive groves inland. The film Mamma Mia! put it on the map in 2008, and the chapel from that film still draws crowds, but the island has absorbed the attention without changing much.

ΑThe feel of the place

Days here are slow. You drive or ride the bus along the west coast, choose a bay, eat lunch in a taverna under the trees, and come back to town for the evening stroll along the quay. There is no party scene to speak of. Visitors are mostly couples, families, walkers and Greeks who have been coming for years; in August, add a lot of Athenian holiday homes.

ΒWhere to base yourself

Skopelos Town (Chora) climbs in a steep amphitheatre above the harbour, a warren of whitewashed houses with grey slate and tile roofs, stone steps and many small churches. Best for anyone without a car, and for the evening atmosphere; be ready for stairs. Aperitton Hotel and Denise Hotel sit on the slopes above the port.

Panormos and Milia on the west coast suit a beach-first stay, with sheltered water and pine shade; Panormos Beach Hotel and the Adrina hotels are here.

Glossa and Loutraki in the north-west are the quietest option. Glossa is a hill village with views over the channel to Skiathos; Loutraki, below it, is the island’s second port and the first stop for many boats.

ΓWhat to see

The essential image is Agios Ioannis sto Kastri, a small chapel on top of a rock pinnacle on the north coast, reached by a long stairway cut into the stone. Go early or late in the day. In town, the Venetian castle crowns the site of ancient Peparethos and looks down over the rooftops. Above town, on the slopes of Mount Palouki, several monasteries such as Agios Ioannis Prodromos and the Evangelismos sit among the pines, connected by old footpaths, and the rock-cut Sendoukia graves make a good walking target. Skopelos is one of the better Greek islands for walking, outside the hottest weeks.

Boat trips go to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and the Northern Sporades, home to the Mediterranean monk seal; sightings are never guaranteed.

ΔBeaches

Almost all the easy beaches are on the south and west coast, strung along the main road. Stafylos is the closest to town and busy; a short path over the rocks leads to Velanio, traditionally used by naturists. Limnonari is a sandy, sheltered cove. Panormos and Milia are long pebble bays with pine behind them, and Kastani, one of the film locations, is the liveliest, with a beach bar. Hovolo, near Neo Klima, has pale rocks and clear water. The north coast is steeper and more exposed.

ΕFood

Skopelos is known across Greece for two things: its cheese pie, a coiled filo pie fried or baked, and its plums, dried and cooked into sweet and savoury dishes. Look for both. Tavernas at the beaches, like Stafilos Restaurant, are part of the rhythm of the day, and in town El Atrio is among the most reviewed addresses. In Neo Klima, Manolis Tavern is a long-time favourite for a seaside lunch.

ΣΤGetting there

There is no airport. Most visitors fly to Skiathos (JSI) and take a boat across, a short hop, or come by ferry from Volos, typically around 2h to 3h30 depending on the vessel; in season there are also boats from Agios Konstantinos. Some boats call at Glossa (Loutraki) and some at Skopelos Town, so check which port is on your ticket. See ferries. From Romania, the usual approach is by car via Kulata–Promachonas and Thessaloniki to Volos. A car or scooter is useful: the bus follows the main road, but many bays and all the monasteries sit off it.

ΖWhen to go

Late May to June and September to early October are ideal, especially for walking. July and August are hot, with highs typically in the low thirties and the sea around 25–26°C; the island is busy with Greek families around mid-August. Winter is quiet, with many places closed. Check the weather before a boat day.

ΗWho it’s for

Couples, families with older children, walkers, and anyone who wants a real town with good food and no nightclubs. Skip it if you need sandy beaches everywhere, a direct flight, or nightlife; Skiathos, next door, does those better.
