Ancient Eretria
Αρχαία Ερέτρια
Eretria was one of the great cities of archaic Greece — a founder of colonies, a rival of Chalkida and the place the Persians burned in 490 BC on their way to Marathon. The ruins are spread through the modern town: a theatre with an underground passage from the orchestra, a gymnasium, baths, the sanctuary of Apollo and the House of Mosaics with fourth-century BC floors. The Swiss School has excavated here since 1964 and publishes a walking route.
