At 1,743 m Dirfys is the highest point on Evia and higher than any mountain on the Aegean islands proper. The village of Steni at its foot is a weekend escape from Athens for the chestnut woods and the cool air, and there is a refuge on the mountain. The usual ascent takes three to four hours from the refuge road and crosses open scree near the top — a proper walk, with snow possible into April.
